DVSI STRATEGY

Our Framework
Our Cornerstones

Play moves us. We move the toy industry.

The German toy industry sets standards in development and production. As its central representative body, the DVSI has been strengthening its position and international competitiveness for over 30 years.

It unites the concerns of its member companies and represents them as a reliable voice to policymakers and the public – at the federal and state levels as well as at the European level together with Toy Industries of Europe (TIE). In this way, the DVSI creates reliable framework conditions and acts as a driving force for a sustainable toy industry.

This work is based on a clear strategic direction with five cornerstones: positioning, effective advocacy, a broad range of services, active exchange within the network, and the stability of the association. The members are always at the heart of everything. They are the driving force and benchmark for action – and the starting point for all DVSI activities.

DVSI history

DVSI HISTORY

Our Roots
Our Journey

How the German toy industry organized itself

The toy industry in Germany initially organized itself into associations at the state level. Where powerful companies emerged, their interests were also organized early on. Thus, the Württemberg-Baden Toy Industry Association (WBSV) was established as early as 1919. Its founding members included the heads of companies such as Margarete Steiff, Märklin & Cie, and Kindler & Briel (Kibri). After the National Socialists dissolved it, this association was re-established in 1950 as the Baden-Württemberg Toy and Hobby Industry Association. Even after the First World War, the Toy and Christmas Ornament Industry division existed within the Metal Goods Economic Group in Berlin, with a branch in Nuremberg. Its managing director was Privy Councillor Schwarz of the Bing company, at that time the world's largest toy factory. After the Second World War, Johann Distler from Nuremberg took over the chairmanship; Bing had already withdrawn from toy production in 1932 as a consequence of the Great Depression.

As early as 1970, initial efforts were made to establish a nationwide organization under the name "Association of the German Toy Industry." It was intended to be open to all regional associations of the German toy, hobby, Christmas ornament, carnival, and party supplies industries. The founding members included the Northwest German Toy Manufacturers' Association (IG), the Association of Bavarian Toy and Christmas Ornament Manufacturers (Vereinigung der Bayerischen Spielwaren- und Christbaumschmuck-Hersteller e. V.) in Nuremberg, and the Stuttgart Hobby and Games Industry Association (Industrieverband Hobby und Spiel Stuttgart). The association was officially registered in 1974.
