Building on the panel discussion on the importance of play held earlier this month in the European Parliament, MEP Maria Guzenina championed the TIE proposal for a dedicated plenary debate. She used the plenary session to call for wider recognition of International Play Day in the EU, formal research into gaps in access to play opportunities in Member States, and increased investment in the necessary play infrastructure. Other speakers from across the political spectrum, including Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis, underlined the importance of play as a vital tool for children's emotional and physical development, while also expressing concerns about the increasing screen time that is displacing traditional play. They also stressed the need for safe play and the challenges posed by illegal products on the Single Market.
